What You Should Know About Breast Cancer

Happy October beauties !!! It’s the first day of the month and there’s no better way to kick it off than with a serious topic . . . BREAST. It’s breast cancer awareness month and SDA will be sharing so much information through these next 30 days. This is an important subject just like any other major health topic in the world. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in American for women besides skin cancer. One common way to have awareness of breast cancer is by doing a self exam.

Here are a few ways to exam yourself:

#1 Look at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Make sure your breast are their usual size, shape, and color. Make sure your breast are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling. If you see any changes such as dimpling of the skin, a nipple that has changed position, or redness, soreness, a rash, or even swelling, then bring your concerns to your doctor's attention.

#2  While you're at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of your nipples that are watery, milky, and yellow fluid or blood.

#3 While laying down, feel your breast by using your right hand to feel your left breast and doing the same method on the opposite side. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, make sure to keep them flat, and use a small circular motion.

#4 Try feeling your breast in the shower while your skin is wet and slippery. Use the same circular motion as option #3.

These are just a few ways to self exam yourself. It’s best to do monthly self exams, that way if you notice any changes you can contact your doctor. Don’t panic if you think you feel a lump in your breast. Most women have lumps or lumpy areas in their breasts all the time. Most breast lumps turn out to be noncancerous. There are a number of possible causes of non-cancerous breast lumps such as hormonal changes or an injury. Be aware of male breast cancer and that it’s a rare cancer that forms in the breast tissue of men. Breast cancer is most common in older men but can also occur at any age.

This is one of many serious topics that you will hear SDA speak about but for the month of October breast cancer will be the main discussion. Show your support for breast cancer awareness month by wearing pink with SDA. All pink lipsticks and lip glosses will be $10 for the month of October.
