What are hair types ?

Your hair type is based on the pattern of your hair and this is also determined by your hair follicle. A hair follicle is the part of the skin, that grows hair by packing old cells together. The shape of the follicle determines your hair type which are :

Type 1 : Straight

Type 2 : Wavy

Type 3 : Curly

Type 4 : Coily

Type 1 : Straight

Type 1 hair doesn’t have a natural curl pattern. The stands of this hair is possible fine, coarse, thick or thin. This hair is also quick to becoming oily so you must be cautious when purchasing certain products that might contain oils to them.

Type 2: Wavy hair

Type 2 hair is broken down into more categories such as 2A, 2B, and 2C.

Type 2A

Type 2A hair is fairly straight. A lot of stylist recommend that you use a gel or mousse to keep your curls defined.

Type 2B

Type 2B hair curls from the middle/midpoint to the ends of your hair making the curls looking like an “S” shape.

Type 2C

Type 2C curls begin at he crown and continue downward. Type 2C hair can be considered usually thick and is quick to frizz in damp weather. A good tip to help with the frizziness of the hair is a difusser.

Type 3: Curly

Type 3A

Type 3A has more of loose amount of loops in it’s “S” shape pattern. It’s best to be cautious on how you brush your hair. I prefer that you use a brush with a wider opening such as a detangle brush.

Type 3B

Type 3B curls start from the roots and has more volume. This curl type also may need more moisture. Try avoiding products that have silicone and sulfates.

Type 3C

Type 3C is a tight curl. It’s best to not comb this hair type while wet but to use a leave in conditioner with your finger tips. combing it may cause frizziness and breakage.

Type 4: Coils

Type 4A

Type 4A needs a lot of moisture such as deep conditioners and mask for the hair. Wash and go looks are a good way to help keep this hair moisturized. When wearing protective styles you would notice that your hair is extremely dry from it.

Type 4B

Type 4B has more of a zig-zag pattern. Two strand twists are a good way to keep this hair detangled as well as gels and creams.

Type 4C

Type 4C is one of the tightest hair types. Try to moisturize this hair as much as possible. Some popular products for this hair type are coconut oils and shea butter creams.
